What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a popular option for replacing a missing or damaged tooth with a new, natural-looking, permanent tooth. Known for their durability and permanence, implants are made of a biocompatible material that fuses with the jawbone to replace the tooth roots.
What to Expect During a Dental Implant Surgery
During implant surgery, a titanium post is surgically implanted in the jawbone. The time taken to complete an implant procedure will vary from one person to another, depending on the jawbone's health and healing time. Here are the steps:
Dr. Okba will start by examining your smile and identifying your needs. If he finds an implant is optimal for your situation, he will discuss your options and the number of required implants. Your treatment plan is then built to meet your preferences and budget.
If you have a damaged tooth, we will extract it first. If you have already lost the tooth, we will skip this step.
If the jawbone doesn't have sufficient strength or gum disease is present, we will help with the needed pretreatments. We put you first and understand that for our treatments to be sustainable, we need to make sure your oral health is in great condition before we proceed with any procedure.
Once your jawbone heals from any previous treatments, the implant post is surgically placed into the jaw to form a base for your new restoration.
Once your jaw has healed, we proceed with affixing the abutment to the implant post and make it ready to secure the artificial tooth or teeth.
The abutment is the part that connects the implant to the restoration. It is used to reinforce the connection between the implant post and the new replacement tooth.
This is the final step. Our dentist will create your natural-looking restoration and place it for you.
Restoration Options That Can Be Supported by an Implant
Single Implant: A single implant and crown are used when you only have one missing tooth. The new tooth provides the chewing pressure needed to maintain your jawbone health. It also preserves your teeth from shifting out of alignment.
Multiple Teeth Replacement with a Fixed Bridge: If you have two or three missing teeth in a row, they can be replaced by a fixed implant bridge. Unlike traditional bridges, these do not put any pressure on healthy adjacent teeth or rely on them for support. Instead, they are anchored in place by attaching them to crowns affixed to the implant posts.
Full Arch Replacement with Fixed Dentures: We can use between four to six implants to replace all the teeth in your upper or lower arch, or both. Fixed dentures are an excellent option for replacing teeth since they do not shift or slip out of place, allowing for optimal function.
Pretreatments for a Successful Implant Procedure
We provide pretreatments to ensure your procedure is a success. Some of the therapies we offer include:
- Bone Grafting – If the jawbones don't have enough strength to hold the implants, we perform a bone grafting surgery. During this procedure, we add new material to the jawbone to strengthen it, by either using your own transplanted bone or using materials explicitly made for grafting.
- Gum or Gingival Grafting – We can treat receding gums by removing healthy tissue from the roof of the mouth and using it to build up your gumline.
- Sinus lift – If you lose teeth in your upper jaw and leave the gap without replacement for a long period, the natural bone below the sinuses might weaken. In this case, you will need a sinus lift. During this process, we add bone underneath the sinuses for support. This treatment helps restore your youthful facial structure and prepares you for a successful implant procedure.
- Tooth Extraction – If you have a damaged tooth that needs to be extracted before we proceed with the implant surgery, we have the required expertise to carry out tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth.
